Dental Checkups & Cleanings in Midtown East Manhattan
The American Dental Association recommends that all the members of your family—from the youngest to the eldest—have at least two dental cleanings and examinations each year. These regularly scheduled visits allow Dr. Aaronson and his colleagues to find problems that you might not otherwise be able to see or feel. For example, an early stage cavity is not necessarily visible or painful. Likewise, there might be other dental and oral health problems developing and, of course, the sooner these are found, the easier they usually are to treat.
Dental Cleanings Upper East Side Residents Smile About
When you schedule an appointment at Dr. Aaronson & Associates, you will see two oral healthcare professionals: a dentist and a dental hygienist. Initially, the hygienist will examine your teeth and gums and take digital x-rays. These images immediately provide a detailed view of your teeth on the chairside computer screen and expose patients to approximately 90 percent less radiation than traditional film x-rays.
The hygienist will also question you about any changes in your general health or new medications that you’re taking. It’s important that we know about any health issues, because some—such as diabetes or a heart condition—may warrant extra precautions or a different approach to treatment.
During a dental cleaning, Midtown residents can sit back and relax in the examination chair while your teeth are thoroughly cleaned and polished. Your at home oral hygiene routine of daily brushing and flossing does help to remove plaque buildup. However, only a professional cleaning by one of our hygienists can thoroughly clean your teeth to remove plaque from hard to reach places, as well as any hardened plaque that is also called tartar.
After your teeth are cleaned, we will polish them, too. Polishing further helps to remove plaque as well as surface stains that can dull the appearance of your smile.
The other component of your biannual checkup is the complete examination of your oral cavity. The dentist and hygienist will check your gums, looking for signs of periodontal disease including red and swollen gums that may bleed when gently probed. In addition, we’ll conduct an oral cancer screening to find the early warning signs of this disease. We are looking for:
- A bleeding sore that will not heal
- A red or white scaly lesion
- A lump or thickening of any soft tissue
We’ll also palpate your jaw and neck to find any swelling or tenderness in lymph nodes. The dentist will also examine your bite as well as your temporomandibular joints to make sure they are working properly.
