Benefits of Laser Dentistry

You might be familiar with a mild form of gum disease called gingivitis. Often, this can be healed with a concerted effort between your home care routine and visits with Dr. Aaronson and Associates for treatment.

When your condition develops to advanced stages of periodontal disease, you face oral surgery that involves the cutting and stitching gum tissue to open and clean pockets of bacteria that can’t be reached otherwise.

That is unless you’re treated by Dr. Aaronson and his team using the BIOLASE® system. Using the power of laser light energy, you’ve got an all-around better option for the fast, safe, and anesthetic-free treatment of periodontal disease. BIOLASE also addresses certain cosmetic issues, reshaping the gumline to alter the proportions of teeth and gums.

Conventional treatments

When gum disease reaches advanced stages, the conventional approach to treatment starts with scaling and root planing, usually over several appointments. Scaling removes plaque and tartar above and below the gum line. You’ve likely developed pockets between teeth and gums where bacteria thrive and attack the tissue in your mouth. Gums pull away from the roots, and you may suffer tissue loss to both teeth and jaw bone. Root planing removes rough surfaces on the root, encouraging the reattachment of gum tissue to the tooth root.

However, depending on how advanced your condition is, you may need surgical procedures to access or repair tooth damage. Flap surgery and grafts of both soft and hard tissue could be necessary. During your weeks of healing, there’s a constant threat of reinfection.

BIOLASE for periodontal treatment

The laser energy used in periodontal procedures has huge advantages over conventional techniques. The precise targeting for which lasers are known permits the removal of inflamed gum tissue only. At the same time, BIOLASE seals the incisions, minimizing bleeding and reducing bruising and swelling.

Laser light also kills bacteria, including the troublesome versions that cause gum disease. This reduces the chance of infection and reinfection. The risk of complications from treatment virtually vanishes. Recovery and healing take less time, and treatment is so gentle you may not need anesthetics.

BIOLASE for crown lengthening

The ability of BIOLASE to reshape gum tissue makes it an effective aesthetic tool when gums dominate your smile. You can now experience crown lengthening without the need for scalpels and blades. Dr. Aaronson can use the abilities of BIOLASE to carefully sculpt gum tissue to reveal more of the crowns of your teeth.

Your gummy smile disappears safely, comfortably, and predictably with less bleeding and faster recovery. As with periodontal procedures, BIOLASE reduces the risk of post-procedure complications. If you tend to hide your smile due to the dominance of your gums, then you’re just an appointment away from a more aesthetically pleasing balance.
